Voile Straps: Undisputed Champion You Didn't Know You Needed

Continuing my ever constant raving of gear from different adventure backgrounds, Voile straps are common in ski touring. These nifty straps are the star of the show when it comes to attaching things and have great versatility when used in backpacking. I'm a strong advocate for looking at other adventure sports to "borrow" gear that may not be common in backpacking (yet)! Other examples I "borrow" routinely include a fishing sun hoodie, trail running shoes (this is definitely common but making a point here!), and I style my backpack to be more like running vests!

Voile straps made their way into my backpack in 2020 to lash together my trekking poles for my Ultamid 2 shelter. I prefer the Nano Series as they run smaller and lighter. All Voile straps are made from UV resistant polyurethane and they range in size, both length and width, therefore you can find something to work for you! Here are ways I incorporate their use when not being used in tent support.

1. Cook Pot Holder

Ditch your cooking pot ditty bag in favor of a Voile strap. Either equal in weight or slightly less! For reference, this is a 24in strap that I had lying around.

2. Control Tent Stakes

If you're like me, keeping track of yet another bag seems annoying, consider ditching the tent stake ditty bag and opting for a Voile strap. This works great in my situation because the strap is right there when it's time to set the tent up.

3. Lash Items to Backpack

Great for lashing commonly used items to your backpack for safe storage! Below I've lashed my cup to the pack for easy use but would work great to lash drying socks, hats, or a rain jacket as well.

4. Trekking Pole Organization

If you've got tri-fold trekking poles, Voile straps can be useful for storing them in your pack. They would also work great to easy lash poles to your pack while not in use.
