DIY Gravity Filter

If you find filtering water to be a chore then listen up because this makes your life easier and efficient! Over the years I've tried an array of filtration systems including Sawyer Mini, Lifestraw Gravity, Katadayn Gravity, MSR hand pumps, and Iodine tables. Wanting to find a system that was quick, efficient, and didn't appear as a serious chore. I loved using the group sized gravity filters but would be silly to carry as a solo hiker so I set out to recreate a smaller version. I drew inspiration from the Platypus and Sawyer gravity systems but modified to be lighter weight (& cheaper).
SUPPLIES
- $37 Sawyer Squeeze w/ inline attachments
- $18 Platypus tubing with inline lock
Cost: $81
Weight: 7.16oz
DIRECTIONS
Assemble supplies and attach inline attachments to Sawyer
Cut long tubing in half
Attach short tubing to 'dirty' side of Sawyer and long tubing to 'clean' side
Attach short tubing to the port on the Platypus bag
Fill bag & let 'er rip!
WHY I CHOSE MY GEAR
Sure this is not the lightest system out there but making camp life easier is worth it to me.
Filter: any inline capable filter will work. When I first created this system I was using my Sawyer Mini however the flow rate was atrocious once it began getting dirty. Feel free to use whatever inline filter/purifier you prefer. The only filter that won't work would be the Katadyn Be Free.
Bag: Platypus designed a great dirty reservoir for two simple reasons: large open top for easy filling and the drainage port sites on the side which allows debris to settle at the bottom and not clog your filter. Another bladder option would be the CNOC Vecto as it has a large opening and your can connect the Sawyer directly to the bladder however you'll need to back flush your filter more often. Less than ideal options would be the Sawyer squeeze bags, Evernew, and Platypus soft sided bladders. These will work but not ideal because they are hard to fill from nonrunning water sources.
Tubing: Platypus tubing is recommended because you'll need the short port attachment if using the Platypus Dirty reservoir. Otherwise any food grade tubing from Amazon will work. I highly recommend the inline lock then you don't have to worry about spilling water if the tubing falls below the bag.
MODIFICATIONS & OPTIONS
- Utilizing only the long tubing with Sawyer attached at the end can attach directly to hydration bladders for easy, closed system filling.
- Save 0.24oz by skipping the blue attachment piece and attaching tubing directly to the inline attachment site.
- Replace strap and buckle with guyline.
QUICK PURCHASE OPTIONS
Don't feel like DIY-ing, you can purchase premade options that you can customize somewhat. Take note: these tend to be more expensive and heavier.
- Platypus 2L GravityWorks system...also offer 4L and 6L options
