Icebreaker is synonymous with merino wool. This New Zealand company works in a wonderful synthetic and wool blend to create an excellent sock. For the 2019 year, I beat on two pairs for backpacking, trail running, and snowboarding. Bonus: after a year they look fresh out of the box. These quickly became my absolute favorite sock!

Fabric Composition:

  • 61% Merino Wool

  • 37% Nylon

  • 2% Lycra

Weight: 2.2oz

COMFORT

A right and left specific cut adapts to the foot anatomy to reduce bunching in toe box.

Flat seem sewing inside prevents rubbing and chafing after long use in wet conditions.

Thicker knit weave is reminiscent of Darn Tough however has a better next to skin feel in my opinion.

Of note there is no compression or arch support built in. The socks fit nice and snug so it is not missed.

FUNCTIONALITY

Absolutely no clammy, soaked feeling

As with any merino wool sock, feet may feel overheated in exceptionally warm conditions or in heavy boots. I never had an issue while in trail runners but did find them warm while wearing my Gortex boots.

After multiple days on the trail with minimal washing, the 'crusty' feeling was minimal. I never missed a three sock rotation while using these. One pair for sleeping and one pair for hiking.

DURABILITY

Show absolutely no wear despite four season wear

Machine washable and had no shrinkage! They can be dried via dryers on low heat however I tend to air dry much of my technical gear to preserve the fibers. May or may not make a difference but works for me!

FINAL THOUGHTS

Icebreaker Hike+ socks hit the mark with thermo and moisture regulation while limiting the multiple day 'crunch' feeling. Plus, they never stunk! Next to skin comfort was fabulous and blisters where never an issue. I was never wishing for compression arch support. After hard use I do believe these would stand up well on a thru hike. An absolutely outstanding sock that everyone should seriously consider. On hot days, I would recommend their lighter options, such as their Hike Cool or Hike Liner.
