Darn Tough is a house hold staple in the outdoor world, whether you're a day trekker or thru hiker, everyone knows and owns a pair. These where the first socks I ever purchased back in 2012. They definitely live up to their name!

Fabric Composition:

  • 59% Merino Wool

  • 39% Nylon

  • 2% Lycra

Weight: 2.4 oz

COMFORT

This is my biggest issue with Darn Tough is the bunching at toe-forefoot junction and over Achilles tendon. These areas have reinforced fabric (helps prevent breakdown) however it leads to weird bunching when flexing.

Next to skin feel is average, no complaints but not unbelievably comfortable either. Both the upper and lower parts of the sock use a high knit pattern so little to no "cushion" feeling.

Arch compression strip is sewn in but I do not feel any difference in this area.

FUNCTIONALITY

I have no complaints about the moisture wicking and avoiding the 'clammy' feeling. After a full day of hiking in boots my feet never feel moist but the socks do hold onto moisture if not properly vented. AKA they won't be able to vent moisture out in Goretex style shoes. Much better with breathable mesh boots and trail runners.

Wool is awesome for limiting the stink and fighting bacteria without any added chemicals. I will note though, they do develop that 'crusty' feeling pretty quickly if not washed frequently. Which brings me to my next point.

Drying time is an issue with any wool product. These have a 59% merino wool blend, therefore when wet it will take a significant period of time to dry out. Usually, just sweat soaked socks will be dry by morning (even in high humidity NE where I hike). If I was on the trail though, they won't be dry by AM and on the pack they go for that days hike.

DURABILITY

This is where Darn Tough really excels. Their sh*t is bombproof. As mentioned, I bought these socks in 2012 and they look brand new! The lightweight material is quite tough and has been reinforced in high wear areas. This is likely the culprit to why I don't love these socks is the extra bulk in these areas (under toes, heel).

No DT review is complete without mentioning the lifetime guarantee. If you manage to blow through a pair, you can send them back in and receive a new, free pair! Fantastic company that stands behind their gear and I love that. Just remember, burning a hole in them while trying to dry them out at the fire will veto your warranty!

FINAL THOUGHTS

Darn Tough are a fan favorite among any outdoor enthusiast! Life time guarantee just seals the deal. However, I personally don't love them due to the comfort issues and length of time to properly dry out. Those who are blister prone may benefit from these reinforced areas!
