Ultralight styled backpacks continue to redefine what a "backpack" is. Over the years, new materials such as DCF have revolutionized the weight game and trends towards frameless have become the norm. As UL companies continue pushing the boundaries, they've begun borrowing from other sports. I love this idea. "Borrowing" ideas from different sports is an ingenious idea as specialty gear can have multiple uses or be revamped for the next activity. One of my favorite gear pieces is a sun shirt that is popular in the fishing community and over the past few years sun shirts are popping up left and right on hikers.

Which brings me to todays point: trail running vests + backpacking backpacks

Shoulder straps and hip belts where designed to off load the majority of the weight to hikers hips. Shoulder straps basically were present to keep the backpack from falling backwards. Majority of them are lacking anything useful and I find this to be wasted space. I recently had my HMG 3400 outfitted with pockets fitted from SWD, which has made all the difference. Over the past few years multiple products have been developed to utilize this space effectively.

Strap modifications have mimicked what comes standard on trail running vests

Recently, a new age in backpacks has emerged and it combines runner style front vests attached to full backpacks, with and without hip belts. The claim to fame? Comfort is dramatically increased as weight is spread over a large surface area while providing multiple storage options that are easily accessed on the go.

I have yet to try out either of these offerings. I am excited to see new developments and offerings in this department as running vest comfort is unparalleled.
